Take care of us?

In the weeks Encantador had been here, not a single tear of water had been shed from the heavens. Any clouds he had seen had been far away, billowing on the horizon of lands he would never see. At first, this had not bothered him, for in his ignorance - in his inexperience with living in such a harsh climate - he had not assumed it would be a problem. But now the oasis had all but disappeared, driven away by Encantador and the two other thirsty stallions who now shared his company, and all that was left was a muddle depression in the ground. Encantador could not remember what it was like to feel refreshed; everywhere, it was dry and hot and dusty. His eyes felt gritty with sand. His throat ached. His right leg was sore from overuse; he'd been favoring it in his attempts to dig up hidden wells of clean water.

But now, there was hope. For the first time in almost an entire season, great black clouds loomed in the distance, and Encantador could practically taste the moisture carried on the wind. All would be restored soon enough. And it was El Aran he thought of often as he learned the bleak, hidden ways of his new home. What would she do? he had often caught himself thinking, but today, now that he was certain the natural balance of the desert would be restored with nutrient-rich rains, he found himself thinking of her in a very different way.

He has more importance to us than 'protector'. Her words from that day echoed sour on his tongue as he imagined himself in her place, raging at a foolish little boy who was broken and beaten by the trials of existence. Her anger was so justified, he mused as he stood watching the storm roll in, relishing the humidity in the air. Encantador, while still thin (and perhaps he would always be thin and rangy as long as he lived here), had filled out from emaciated to lithe. His itchy winter coat had long since shed, bleached to a creamy white by the relentless sun, and his muscles had strengthened, painting taut curves all over his dun body. What would she think if she saw me now?

The fates, it seemed, had intended that day be sooner than later, for not a moment after the thought had rolled through his brain did Encantador scour the horizon with blank brown eyes to find a curious black silhouette flailing on the ground. Despite the odd shadows it cast, it was quite obviously equine: an individual making themselves at home, it seemed, though they were a fair distance away, perched on the border. Not a mirage, surely?

He found himself approaching the figure, hooves scuffing the dry earth, unaware of the exact moment he had decided to do so. Ears flicked forward curiously, he parted his lips to greet the stranger just milliseconds before a pang of recognition gripped him. For a moment, his heart pounded so hard he thought it might burst. Swearing internally, his mind raced as he tried to make sense out of what he was seeing. Had she found out he lived here? If not, why was she here? But as soon as the latter question sprung up in his mind, he knew the answer just as quickly. This is her true home. It always has been.

"I don't recall sending out an invitation," he finally called out once he was within easy earshot, a dry smile tugging discreetly at the corners of his ash-grey lips.
