The new carpets had been a long time coming. It was surprisingly difficult in Shaman to obtain any of the size required, since they either had to be traded in somehow or made. Both processes were time consuming, and the damage that had been done when everyone had been walled up within the castle during the big flood was extensive. Arthur remembered vividly how Poppy had roamed the rooms and corridors leaving general scenes of devastation in her wake, and, apparently, during those months, the uncontrollable divine had been going through a phase which involved hapless spells that were particularly dangerous for floor coverings, curtains and other upholstery. Fortunately, all of the rooms that Arthur used on a daily basis had been left unscathed, and so the burn marks and gaping holes that were obvious in the other rooms had been easy enough to avoid. The wait for the carpets had not, therefore, felt as drawn out as it might have done if that had not been the case.

The guards had brought the kart into the main courtyard shortly after midday, and, with the King’s help and supervision, they had worked their way steadily upwards floor by floor. They had completed the ground, first and second floors before taking a break in order to share a cooling drink, and had then proceeded up to the third floor. The group was made up of eight faeries, including the King himself, and they were milling around in front of the first room in need of address. The room was around the corner from Arthur’s own private study, and was only a little smaller. Once the new carpet was laid, the King intended to offer it to Epos, so that she might have her own permanent base, or office, within the castle walls, from which to perform her duties as Princeps. The old carpet had been removed the day before, so that the room was ready to receive its new rug.

Shaman had taught Arthur to always expect the unexpected, particularly in any space which had been subjected to Poppy at one time or another, but it was something of a surprise to discover a man rolled up inside a carpet. “I trust,” the King said with a half smile, surveying the stranger with his grey eyes, “that I did not pay a higher sum for this rug than I would have done, had you not been inside it.” The smile broadened, as Arthur extended his own hand in order to clasp the one that Demon had offered him, “Arthur,” the King introduced himself courteously, “I do not think we have previously had the pleasure of meeting. Did you sleep well?”
