Like sand stuck in her coat, Encantador’s first words clung to her. We need to rebuild it ourselves. Perhaps that was the answer. It seemed too simple, almost, but the black mare knew that sometimes the simplest things were the best. El Aran tucked the thought away to savor later, but already her eyes gazed afar as if she could see the future. The mountains across from them that had seemed threatening to the mare only moments before now rose in triumphant peaks. She recalled the day she had stood there, alone before the storm broke, and the euphoria that had filled her.
She turned to look at her partner as he lifted his head. El Aran had acknowledged that Dany would likely never be a large part of her life again. Just as Sarabi had vanished from her life, so had Dany. The desert mare worried that Encantador would be next. "We are together," she said, reasserting the reality that the dunskin stallion had not left her. "We take strength from one another, and are steadier because of it."
El Aran’s eyes shifted away again, back to the new edge of their territory. The sky above stretched blue and clear and cloudless. "I trust you to lead this herd," she said. Her voice was soft and low. "And I want you to know that this isn’t something you have to do alone."
