i'm lost in paradise

We've been falling for all this time
And now I'm lost in paradise

Though her limbs ache, it is nothing to the anguish in Aveline's heart.

The numb denial is slowly dissipating from her mind, and the discomforting pinpricks of reality force their way to the surface of her thoughts. Like a physical blow, the full impact of Giselle's absence halts the ebony mare in her tracks; the filly had been the stimulating warmth that had penetrated the cold and darkness of her world, and without her comforting presence, Aveline struggles not to sink beneath the surface once again. Inhaling deeply through her quivering nostrils, the scent of Hollowpoint restores a sense of purpose and a measure of composure to the sable mare. From the moment that they had gazed upon the heavens together and bared their souls, Aveline had known that her purpose lay with the painted stallion, at his side.

She only hope that time would mend the wounds that had formed a rift between them.

Aveline does not make it more than a few more faltering strides before the impossible call echoes down the beach. For a moment she denies even the reality of her sight as the auburn filly gallops across the sands toward her; then, abandoning the fetters of her mind, Aveline embraces her heart, racing to meet her daughter, and to embrace her. Smothering the child's body with gentle nudges and nips of affection, the mare's tears of relief dampen both her own smoky black hide, and Giselle's russet coat as she finds her voice at last.

"Oh Giselle, ma fille...mon ange. I thought I 'ad lost you!"

Aveline breathes throatily, pressing her cheek against the filly's neck fervently, as if even the small distance between their bodies was a separation that was too great for her to bear. Even though Giselle's safety was ascertained, it would likely be a long time before Aveline was able to forget the incident, and until then she vowed that she would not leave her daughter's side for only a moment.

Even Hollowpoint could not force her to break that promise.

Aveline watches the stallion approach, feeling the familiar flutter in her heart as he draws near and presses himself to her. She leans into the embrace, breathing a gentle sigh into his skin as she enjoys the moment of completeness, and feeling a pang as it ends too quickly and Hollowpoint pulls away. His golden eyes seek answers, and she smiles wanly, though the warmth of her expression does not extend to her troubled eyes; to buy herself a moment to gather her thoughts, Aveline's gaze shifts from the stallion to the rolling hills of their new home.

"Eet is so beautiful 'ere."

She responds softly, and then, spilling from her mouth before she can stem the flow of words.

"Mon chéri...I know that I almost failed you, that I almost failed our daughter.."

For a moment she is overcome, and Aveline swallows hard, her eyes brimming again as she allows them to meet his.

"I thought she 'ad been lost to the sea, I searched but I could not find her...I should have known that she would always return, just like you did. Just like I will always return to your side...whatever else may come."

She presses herself to him again, then drops her muzzle to brush Giselle's flank gently, including her daughter in the general embrace. Once she had dreamed of freedom from the shackles of a man's will, had run from what she had known to start a life all her own; now, she longed for nothing more than to remain bound to Hollowpoint's side, and to share the life that she had been granted with him. Above all, she would love and protect him and their family, striving to be everything that they needed her to be.

They were already everything that she could hope for.
