 i s o k e He called her beautiful. For a moment, Isoke inclines her head to check on her daughter, as if to see if the stallion’s words are true. And they are. So tiny and innocent, so pale and pure with eyes like a clear summer sky, Isoke knows he is right. But she cannot help it: her eyes soon enough are tracing the unsightly curve of the filly’s snout, and her meagre happiness dissipates yet again. Was he serious? While she’s never experienced it herself, she’s heard stories about stallions killing newborn foals out of mercy, provided they are not of their blood or are too weak to survive. And Isoke has experienced plenty when it comes to untrustworthy males. But as her gaze returns to the grullo stranger before her, she doesn’t feel the need to be afraid. Perhaps it is because she is exhausted and tired of hating men, but she wants to be able to trust him. For once, she wants to prove her best friend wrong. The feeling of Morgan’s nose against her shoulder is reassuring, and for a heartbeat she allows herself to hope that the mare will heed her advice. But in the next moment, she finds herself strangely irritated. Pinning her ears back, she remains silent, but stands brooding as though a dark cloud has passed over her – which it has, both metaphorically and literally. The storm to the west is rolling in ever faster, and the sea continues to crash angrily behind them. She can feel her daughter’s bent nose bumping against her elbow as she finally speaks. “You’re very kind, Nikola,” she says with deliberation, casting a careful sideways glance at Morgan, “but my friend and I have some things to discuss.
