 e n c a n t a d o r Sezja. He repeats her name in his mind, but otherwise remains ghostly silent as he leads her inland, further and further away from the crashing of the shore. They cross the flat expanse of baked earth and soon enough are amongst the sands, which are so hot that the air itself seems to sweat. Encantador’s nostrils are flaring as he slows, but otherwise he shows no physical discomfort; his sleek pelt was long ago bleached to a creamy white under the relentless desert sun, and it reflects the rays of heat quite effectively now. The oasis is not where he had meant to stop, but a small voice in the back of his head has coaxed him into thinking of the girl’s welfare and forgetting his own selfish woes for a few stolen moments. A couple scrawny trees and a huge sand-swallowed boulder provide shade for the meagre pool which is surrounded on its banks by tough patches of faded green grass. It’s here that he stops for the time being and lowers his head to take a small drink. Once he’s sated the worst of his thirst, he lifts his head and looks at the mahogany female with a fathomless expression. ”I’m Encantador, and this is your new home.” The words come out sounding harsher than he had intended, and for a moment he hesitates, his brown eyes softening with sympathy. “I’m sorry it had to be this way.” six-year-old stallion of the desert; son of el barroco and writhe |
