i'm lost in paradise

We've been falling for all this time
And now I'm lost in paradise

Inhale, exhale.

Keep breathing.

Time, it seemed, had been determined to pass quickly, to wrest from her one of the most precious pieces of her heart. Though her chocolate gaze was warm as it traveled the contours of the landscape far below, Aveline could not entirely hide the desperation that she felt as she finally faced the most recent hole punched through her chest. It was difficult to breathe as she recalled the purpose behind her pain; perhaps her lungs had been punctured by the same blow, and each breath that she stole into her aching chest was nothing but an invention of her mind.

Giselle was gone.

It had been imminent, she told herself as she exhaled firmly in yet another sigh, repressing the sobs that were slowly building within her as she probed the ragged edges of this gaping new wound. Had she not been bracing herself for the moment since her daughter's birth - knowing that, one day, the child must follow her own path? But I was not prepared for it to be this soon, she confesses inwardly as a single tear manages to escape the carefully-erected dam of her composure. I thought I had more time...I dreamed that we would be a family - Giselle, Hollowpoint, and I.

It is the thought of her beloved that lends Aveline the strength to turn away, to descend the ledge that had been her vigil - to seal the hole of Giselle's absence the best that she could, and move on. The familiar heat courses through her veins as she remembers his touch, yearning to not simply revisit the magical evening that had brought them together, but to relive it. The burning orb of the sun sunk lower, until it was extinguished by the sea, but Aveline does not notice the absence of warmth and light; the stars are opening their eyes overhead to guide her, and she is still flushed, burning, as she seeks out Hollowpoint. In the dim glow of moonlight, she picks her way up the highest of the ridges; by the words he had spoken to her so long ago, she is certain that this is where the painted stallion would be.

The rolling hills leave me close to the sky and it feels like you're on top of the world..

But he was her world, and there was nothing she would ever place above him, not even herself.
