the missing piece that makes me fit

morgan -----
by eli out of caylee

Morgan can barely see through the falling rain. It takes squinting her eyes to keep the raindrops out of them to be able to see Isoke’s dark form, and even Brienne’s pale gold one is blurry. She doesn’t know why it has taken Isoke this long to come to her (or send for her, in this case), but she can feel her irritation rising that they have to have this conversation in these circumstances.

Despite her emotions, Morgan can’t help the grin that slides into place on her dark lips when she feels Isoke’s teeth tugging at her saturated mane. The coarse strands have been glued to her neck since the rain began. How long has it been now? I can’t even remember the last time I saw the sun. She jerks her head slightly and gives Isoke a mock glare, pretending to be upset about the contact.

Looking at Brienne’s innocent face, the bright blue eyes not at all dulled by the weather, the mare wonders what the filly is thinking. Morgan has always thought that if Isoke’s daughter could speak, she would be the wisest of them all. She takes a deliberate step away from Isoke and toward Brienne. She’s missed the silent girl; Morgan had left her well enough alone when she was younger, not wanting to do anything to tarnish her innocence. Now, however, the mare hopes that the filly is old enough to spend some time with her curmudgeon of an aunt.

”I’ve missed you, pretty girl,” she murmurs, brushing her nose across Brienne’s wet neck.

One ear is turned toward Isoke, letting Morgan absorb her best friend’s argument. The thing is, it isn’t even really an argument. Isoke must know how reluctant Morgan would be to stay here permanently. Morgan sighs quietly, turning to face Isoke fully while still remaining at Brienne’s side.

”Don’t use your daughter as a bargaining chip, Isoke,” she chides gently. She’s doesn’t doubt Isoke’s claim that Brienne has missed her, but she doesn’t want any form of blackmail on the table so that there will never be any doubts about her decision. She wants Isoke to know exactly where she’s coming from.

I’m sure you remember me telling you that I was born in Paradise,” she begins, dark head turning slightly so that she can gaze into the distance, looking toward the horizon in the direction of the territory of which she speaks. ”I’ve always hated it because of what it cost me, and then after what happened in the Harbor…”

Her eyes come back to Isoke, still slightly glazed from the unpleasant memories. ”I will stay as long as you want to be here. I know this is where you were born and I know how much it means to you.” She glances toward Brienne for a second before looking at Isoke again. ”I know you want us all to be safe, and I’ve come to realize we probably couldn’t do much better in that department.”

Morgan doesn’t remember the last time she’s said this much at one time – if, indeed, it’s ever happened. Her gaze turns very serious. ”You two are all I have in the world, all I need in the world. No matter how I feel, if you asked me to do something important, I would do it for you.”

It makes no difference to her who else is in the herd, but she supposes that Isoke is right, that more interaction could do her some good. Hoping to lighten the mood (if only the weather would help with that), she grins and says, ”How about we wait and make sure we won’t be swimming to find everybody? I’d rather not meet them while we’re all floating around.”
