 "Her?" Jezibelle’s lower lip protruded and her ears turned back, but she did not correct the flaxen liver chestnut. Let the stallion wallow in his ignorance. She would keep her lunar lover’s secrets all to herself. "You’re right," she conceded with a flick of her tail. "I didn’t ask." The blanketed mare turned her eyes toward the horizon, giving the setting sun a moment of her full attention.
When she turned her gaze back to the horse at her side, it was to observe the stallion who had been creeping in the shadows and corners of the Crossing before bringing her to Salem. Badr looked like he was crafted for the sands, slim and hardy and standing at ease on the loose surface of his territory. Jezibelle did not think she would tolerate living in the Dunes if he was not also in residence. The tiny grains got everywhere and the air was uncomfortably dry. But Jezibelle was used to discomfort, albeit not typically the physical kind. She had adapted to her new environment as well as she knew how, which is to say she did not move much and when she did it was when the sun was either inconspicuous or altogether invisible. Jezibelle had always preferred the night anyway, although here it was more difficult to avoid other horses. The only water and relative safety was at one of the three oases, and not even she was foolish enough to believe she could survive on the sands by herself. "Why here?" she asked. It did not occur to her that there were other mares in Badr’s life before her; even the mares who composed the herd now were little more than ideas. Jezibelle assumed the stallion had come to claim the Dunes alone. Although she supposed a place so devoid of trees could only be considered paradise. |
