The Forest was cold and empty, or so it had seemed to Fayte. She remembered that, not too long ago, it had been filled with promise. Promises that could be, promises that the Stars had burned into her. Now, though, in the dark, Fayte was again reminded of just how quickly fortunes could change. She was the only one left. She had spent much of these last seasons looking after her own daughter. She had been reading the Stars. She had decided to trust them when they told her that she was not to leave.

And tonight, tonight was special. Because standing next to the chestnut appaloosa was her daughter. Pleiades, with her coat dotted with brown in fair patterns, was not yet her mother's height. But she was growing. She was a pretty creature, and Fayte was pleased. She had grown up well thus far, and could hold her own.

Fayte stood in her favorite clearing, her muzzle glancing between the stars above and her daughter's watchful eyes. She was teaching her the signs. The wonders and the stories that the Stars held. It was wisdom that was passed down from mother to daughter in her original herd. So now she was doing the same.

"So," Pleiades began. "That star there is the sign of Rise, right?" She looked at her mother. "And the three in the moon means a storm in three days?"

Fayte nuzzled her daughter with a soft smile on her features.

"And what does a Rise mean?" Fayte asked.

"Um..." Pleiades looked up. This was her first time reading. Normally it was her mother telling her. It was no exact science, but Fayte was rarely wrong. Pleiades admired that about her mother. "It means a change is coming? A new beginning. If seen in Spring it marks the birth of a new king?"

"Right," Fayte said with a smile. Pleiades jumped up and smiled. Having gotten something right. Fayte's ear twitched as she heard the sound of footfalls. A Rising Star could also symbolize a new leadership. There were a dozen meanings for any sign and sometimes the only ways to be sure was to look back and see where you were wrong and right. Because you could be wrong.

"Wait here," Fayte said.

"What's wrong?" Pleiades asked. Fayte didn't answer she set off down the hill. She had an unreadable expression on her face. She had a daughter to protect and any threat was going to be dealt with as such. Harshly and quickly. There were few who would want to get on wrong side of a mother and her child. She spotted the stallion quickly. It wasn't Bondurant. She set off forward - confident in her forest.

"Who are you?" She asked stepping out into the stallion's path. "And what are you doing here?"
