there have been numerous "extinct" species over the years that have "returned from the dead", so none of this is really surprising. Technically its the "eastern mountain lion" that is extinct. But the fact is there never really was an "eastern mountain lion" that differed in DNA from the western ones. Their original range was across the entire northern half of the US.
