I was going to post to question your first theory about a buteo eating passerines at your feeder and felt that it was mostly likely an accipiter. A Red-tailed Hawk would find it difficult to catch a flying, alert birds like Northern Cardinals and woodpeckers while it would be easy pickings for a Sharp-shinned or Cooper's Hawk if the cardinal or woodpecker forgot for a second to watch out for danger. That is not to say that a Red-tailed Hawk would not try to catch these birds if it thought for a minute that it had a chance of being successful. Replies: There have been no replies.
