Name: Graeling

Gender: Male

Appearance: Though he is on the tall side, Graeling has the air of a smaller person – as such, the closer one comes, the more surprised one tends to be by his size. Graeling is broad-shouldered with a swimmer’s build and perhaps an over-defined upper body. His hair is a soft brown, with premature graying throughout, and his eyes are the color of a sky just before rain, erring on the side of blue, green or gray depending on the light. His skin is deeply tanned, with a smattering of freckles over his nose, shoulders and chest.

Defects: DEVASTATINGLY HANDSOME. Just kidding. He’s not very comfortable on land. Much better suited to swimming, or the deck of a ship. Heights are not his favorite. He has a strong fear of confined spaces, insomnia, and he cannot go long without the physical closeness of another Fairy. His magical ability (see below) can be as much a curse as a blessing.

Age: Looks to be around 24

Personality: As an empath, Graeling is extremely sensitive to other people’s states of mind. In addition to sensing their moods, he feels an echo of other people’s emotions/feelings in himself. For his own part he is pretty even-keeled, avoiding outbursts of emotion in order to avert strong reactions from others, which would perpetuate the cycle. He is a quiet extrovert – that is, while he does not thrive on being the center of attention, he does crave company and is energized by peaceful social situations. As soon as things get too rowdy, however, he’ll attempt to escape the situation.

Graeling is a gentle giant (well…“giant” is an exaggeration), perhaps due to his peculiar gift. He goes out of his way to be kind.

History: On earth, Graeling was a Selkie, transforming into a sea lion when submerged in water.

Sample post:
The sea was cool, dark and deep. Graeling closed his eyes, let the sense of vastness wash over him, trailing chilly fingers along his back. Suspended here between the reef, the drop-off and the distant surface, he felt as if he might be adrift amongst the stars. A current tugged at him gently, not near enough to sweep him off with the plankton and jellies, but still insistent, reaching. With a flick of his strong flippers, he arced toward it and rode it out, like a wave.

Graeling could feel the others, distantly. Their joyful play was a tug like the current, calling him to join in. But he had a job to do in town, and much as he might lose himself in sealskin every morning, the knowledge of his mundane responsibilities nagged his subconscious. The waves dumped him on the reef, roughly. Fine, you go to the land. You go there. But know it cannot love you like I do! As the water receded, so too did his slick brown fur, his limbs like seawings. He pulled himself up onto the ledge above the reef, trailing kelp. His hair stuck to his cheeks.

The water was cold, but the air felt colder. Graeling knew this was an illusion, but the transition never lost its shock – he wrapped his arms around himself, hugging tightly, while he climbed the ledge to the bank where he kept his clothes. The fabric, too, clung awkwardly, but it was a temporary discomfort. He shook the sea out of his hair as he made the trek to his car.

It was unfair, this charade. Ridiculous, that fairies were forced to live a lie. Graeling’s magic was not some threat, some weapon that he would lord over humankind to make them do his bidding. Why should he have to wear a mask in order to make them more comfortable? He frowned, starting the ignition with a double-pump of the clutch, and put the car in drive. Ungainly things, cars. A very uncivilized method of transportation.

Graeling watched the shore recede from view in the mirrors as he drove away.

Anything else you wish to include: Actually, if I could use that coin for THIS character, that would be great. I’d like him to be an empath – able to feel other people’s emotions. In the beginning levels, this will be something he cannot turn off (very overwhelming), and something that is not always comprehensible. It also doesn’t apply to things like lying, because that isn’t an emotion. Fear, pain, happiness, desire, shame, excitement, etc are fair game, but usually have to be accompanied by a ton of interpretation to be useful at all.

EDIT:: Gia said coin usage would be ok.

EDITEDIT:: Power is in discussion
