 "The man who fears losing has already lost." Eventually the crunching of briskly-moving hooves in old snow reaches his ears. At first it resonants only in the back of his mind, and his ears only twitch in an instinctive reflex. But then, as it becomes more audible and tangible, Solgar realizes that there is someone else here: someone else that had slipped in unnoticed. He and the girls are no longer alone.
Immediately he tenses with trepidation, anticipating the unwelcome sight of a stallion to come trotting over the gentle rise off to his right. But he doesn't move. He simply waits. When the dark silhouette of the mare he had long since forgotten about appears and continues moving straight toward him, the stallion relaxes a little, but it takes a moment to place her. Even when the lurch of realization rocks his gut, he continues standing silently with his leg cocked, watching her move toward him. Her expression is blank and unreadable, and he isn't certain how to respond to her sudden arrival back in his life. But she cosies up next to him as if to continue their last conversation: as if she had never left, and there hadn't been a whole six months since they'd seen each other. They stand parallel to one another, and Solgar hears the low, lazy rumble of acknowledgement in her throat. He grunts in return, allowing his gaze to resume watching the distant figures of his mares and wondering if either Neassa or Winter will notice they have a visitor. He almost hopes they won't. The silence is comfortable for a while, as if they are old friends, but eventually he feels the burning urge to say something. "Did you find him?" he says simply, his voice low and gravelly.
