in what distant deeps or skies

Come on, Oskar. We'll have time to explore later.

The bay colt glared up at his young mother, his stance defiant. He shook his head, huffing slightly. He didn't want to go anywhere. He wanted to stay and explore the small, secluded meadow they'd found. But mother had other ideas; she wanted to go introduce him to the herd so they could fawn over the newest arrival and comment on how adorable and fluffy he was. Oskar certainly was not having any of that. He was a boy! Boys weren't supposed to be cute. Boys were supposed to be handsome.

Yscha, on the other hand, was also having none of it. She was becoming impatient with her son, not quite understanding why he wouldn't listen to her. He was supposed to be obedient; she was his mother and he was supposed to listen to her! Isn't that how it worked? The dapple found herself confused by why it wasn't working for her. Finally, after more unsuccessful encouragement, she simply resorted to harsher means of getting his little butt in action.

The first couple of nudges were gentle, a warning to him that he best get moving or Mommy dearest would be quite upset. When he barely budged, Yscha's nudges became firmer until finally she simply resorted to nearly knocking him down with a loud huff. "Come, now." she said firmly, her tone one of utter frustration. Why couldn't parenting just be simple?

Figuring it was perhaps best to acquiesce to his mother's wishes, Oskar pushed himself up, grunting under his breath. Yscha ignored his mutters, though she did roll her eyes a bit. They reached their destination in a rather short amount of time. In the distance, Oskar could hear the hoofbeats and whinnies of his herdmates. He thought his mother was going to lead him to the common grounds to be fawned over by the other women, but at the last minute, she stopped and changed her course, instead leading the pair away. Needless to say, this confused him greatly.

Curious to know what his dam had seen that had made her change direction, he trotted ahead, peeking around her much larger body so he could see what was ahead of them. Soft brown eyes came to rest upon a very unusual-colored mare off in the distance. Oskar's eyes widened at the sight of her. The unusual spotted pelt of the female certainly caused her to stand out amongst the vivid greens and pinks and blues and yellows that filled the Forest. Oskar had never seen a coat like hers before. Then again, he was only a couple days old, he hadn't seen much in that short time.

The duo stopped a yard or two away from the female, and Oskar watched as his mother gave a friendly nod in her direction. Hello, she said sweetly, cocoa-colored eyes resting on the girl's face. You seemed alone. I figured perhaps I could come keep you company. If you don't mind, of course. I don't want to be intrusive. Oskar peeked out at the girl from beneath his mother's frame, staring up at her, fascination gleaming in his eyes.
