he who fears losing has already lost

"The man who fears losing has already lost."
-George R. R. Martin

He is surprised when she comes closer to him, considering she had bared her teeth at him just moments before. He is nearly knocked off balance when she leans again him, and stumbles in place, hopping with his bad leg still held awkwardly in the air. But he feels it: the strange, undulating sensation of the foal shifting in her barrel. It's all he can do to stop himself from shuddering visibly.

When she pushes past him, he swivels to face her, his dark face still carrying an expression of worry and suspicion. She rants at him, the anger visibly wreaking havoc in her swollen gold frame, her pale face creased with a maelstrom of emotion. He can do nothing but listen. When she is done, she deflates, as though visibly defeated by it all. She seems more vulnerable in those moments, and more approachable, so he pricks his ears and swallows the sharp retorts he had been preparing in his mind.

"There's an old family saying I like to live by. 'He who fears losing has already lost'." He sighs thoughtfully, staring off into the snowy distance for a few moments, before hobbling closer to the mare. He eyes her warily, hoping she will not lash out at him. "Get your rear in gear, Winter. You'll be fine. From what I've heard from the various women in my life, it's always easier the second time."

It's the most support he can muster without being sarcastic. He hopes she will not ask him for more.
