Carden Alvar Nature Board by Bob BowlesSeen from the bus

The latest observations from the Facebook page of Mark Spurr of Quaker Oaks Farm:

Many years ago, Judy and I developed Riverdale Farm, we were young. We would go out to the country, to learn from our elders. We were city kids, who found focus, in the rural teachings of many interesting folks.
As we gleaned the spirit of their importance, we translated that, into programs that taught city kids about our rural heritage.
Now the accuracy of our interpretation may have been loose, but it was fun.
Today, on the bus, it was a sad morning. This morning was cool and bleak, it was dull. The deer are yarding. In the spring, deer "yard" together, on the Cardin Plain. Across County Rd. 46.... they cross! Today one didn't make it. I passed by the scene. This was a dull day.
This afternoon, bleakly, I crossed the plain, to retrieve my charges. As I crested the hill before the gore I was apprehensive, but then, right there in the middle of the road was the most ravishingly gorgeous Bald Eagle! I was young again, as he flew up into a tall tree replete with marauding crows.
By the school, I was bright with that rural hue, late there, due to this magical moment. I bubbled when the bus was full. I burbled out loud that today we will see a bald eagle by the guts on the road. Either way, the kids were delighted.
I slowed the bus to a stop, by the guts on the road and we all watched this glorious bird in that tall tree. I shared my binoculars. I hope Judy and I will be one of those elders one day.
A bald eagle !!!!
