he who fears losing has already lost

"The man who fears losing has already lost."
-George R. R. Martin

I told you there would be a child.

Her voice, though quiet, holds an element to it that gives Solgar the distinct feeling he is being chided or mocked: as if they are both children in the middle of a squabble that has been going on for so long that neither of them can remember how it had started. He grits his teeth and shifts his weight, sensing the tension in the air between them. Off to his right, rustling and snapping of twigs indicates that Winter and her daughter have thankfully heeded his command and retreated.

Now it is only the three of them.

He is unsure what he had done to offend her, in all honesty, unless she still held him accountable for his actions of the day they had met. Well, it takes two to tango, sister, he thinks wryly, frowning, but instead only says, "Aye, you did." Volpe's stare is hard, an even match for his own; they could be standing here all day waiting for each other to blink. He exhales deeply and deliberately pulls his gaze away to try and dissolve some of the electricity between them, focusing on the unconscious little body of their daughter instead. His gaze softens.

She must be exhausted from the swim, he reasons, and it is that fact that makes him wonder just why the pale mare had dragged her daughter all the way here if only to flaunt her in his face. "And then you left," he finally adds, looking back up into those strange amber eyes, so like little liquid gems of hardened honey. The unsaid question hangs heavily in the air: Why did you return?

But he says nothing, resolved to make her read his mind.

there are only a few days left before I go on away, so unless you don't mind stretching this thread through to the end of the month, do you want to tie it up asap with the next couple of posts?
