LIAT

OUT OVER A DESOLATE VALLEY ROAD

She had not thought to be wary of the distance that she had let grow between herself and the herd. Liat had often been allowed to wander precariously far when it had been only her and her mother wandering through the island that had become known as home. While Volpe had often followed her through the brush to make sure nothing of ill conception befell the girl as she explored, the dunskin was all but left to her own devices when she moved through the trees. Sometimes, the girl would stumble across beautiful things and be forced to stay in one spot until her mother appeared, waiting patiently so she could share such sights with the pale woman.

Volpe had taught the girl well, and while she had once held such respect and admiration for the sea, now she only saw it as a frothing mess that acted as the brutal barrier between herself and her only true family.

Thanks to the seemingly aloof behaviour of her father and the fact that she knew next to nothing about the man, this place felt nothing like home and everything like a prison. Like this was the place that her mother had decided to leave her here in hopes of teaching her a lesson; a cruel and painful lesson that would, perhaps, strengthen her against the notion of the distance that would one day be forced between herself and the perlino dun.

While the young girl ducked and wove her way through the trees, she noted that the day had grown somewhat dismal and grey overhead, the clouds threatening to split open and make the weather match her somewhat downcast mood. Despite noticing this change in the sky above, she did not, in fact, notice the red skinned boy that she had seemed to pick up a few yards back. While Liat was on a mission to find someone to take her mind off the abandonment of her mother and the lonely taste that her father had left in her mouth after their unbelievably brief encounter, she was almost completely caught off guard when the colt finally decided to pop his head out of the undergrowth in order to address her.

When he face suddenly appeared, the girl felt her heart shoot through the roof of her mouth, and her lungs felt tight for a moment or two as she realized that she could have been stalked and slaughtered by a predator, and was somewhat thankful that it was only another child close to her age that had found her. Comforted by this idea, she offers a sheepish smile in reply to his observation, still somewhat stunned by his sudden appearance and not thinking as straight as she should. As he asks her to return to the herd with him and uses his head to indicate that the path she had taken lead her in the opposite direction, she flicks her ears in slight annoyance. “I don't think I'm a part of that herd yet.” With a little frown she continues. “I don't feel like I belong there.
