ONCE IN A DREAM OF A NIGHT I STOOD

Lone in the light of a magical wood

Arcana is used to the haggard look of a desert horse. Her own mother is the only female role model she ever had, until Af moved in. Brijesha was always sickly thin, with a dull, dust-covered coat, broad, cracked hooves and tired eyes. Her pale tail was dyed yellow from her own urine, and she was always covered in scrapes and scratches, all in various stages of healing. Now, she is only a skeleton, picked clean and dispersed by scavengers. Compared to her mother, Arcana is a picture of vibrant youth. She is leanly built, but maintains a healthy weight for her build. The points of her hips and flashes of her ribs are visible through her thin skin, but she is not gaunt. Her eyes are stoic but do not lack the luster of life. Arcana used to think herself, if not beautiful, at least aright, until she met Af. Af is a year older, and though they probably rival each other for beauty, Arcana looks up to the older filly, and strives to be only half as cool as she is. Arcana has become much more critical of herself since she's begun to encounter others nearer to her own age.

Arcana does give a curious tilt of the head when Orhan confesses to the mare in the other oasis being his mother. Arcana has not known many other mother-child relationships. She only knows that she and her own mother were inseparable. Brijesha was deaf and Arcana was her ears. She couldn't imagine leaving her mother out of anything while she was still alive. Though Arcana does understand the uniqueness of their situation, and wonders if snubbing your mother is something that's normal for colts Orhan's age to do.

When the conversation moves elsewhere, Arcana does not question the colt. Instead, the question is on her. Why did she come to visit? She's can't say "Well, I think you're cute and decided to follow you.", because a girl can't confess a crush without dire consequences. She doesn't want to admit to her desire to find an adventure that might compete with Af. She doesn't want to reveal her jealousy even to herself. Arcana answers as honestly as she can without betraying any embarrassing motives. "I've never been outside the Badlands before. I thought I needed a change in scenery. When I thought of where I should go, I thought of you." Arcana quickly continues, not wanting to sound like she sought him out solely for his pretty face. "What brought you through the Badlands that day?", she asks curiously.

She is about to point out the risk he took running through a strange territory. Then she remembers what's she's doing in this very moment, fraternizing with a strange colt, in a strange land, without her lead's permission. The filly casts a nervous glance at the afternoon sun on its steady descent to sunset and to the lengthening shadows through the grass. She's been gone for a while. Hopefully Bayard won't notice her disappearance.

soul-deep in visions that poppy-like sprang

AND SPIRITS OF TRUTH WERE THE birds THAT SANG
