We're breaking in, shaping up

Syndrome gave a polite not when she was introduced. Her shyness was fighting for ground with the irritation that was slowly taking hold of her mind. Normally she wouldn’t mind minimal conversation, but this chorus of crickets that stood in the place of any conversation whatsoever was awkward and uncomfortable.

When finally she worked up the guts to break this air of discomfort, the painted mare stepped rather hesitantly toward Costello. The bay mare had yet to speak, but her complete silence made Syndrome suspicious as to whether or not she ever would. She had not seen the mare before now and certainly had not heard her voice.

”Hello,” she said, her confidence returning a bit. She said it generally, her speech having no specific object, but she stood a bit closer to Costello than the others and turned toward to speak directly to her. ”I haven’t met you before,” she said. She didn’t elaborate as she didn’t want to invite a specifically spoken response, in case the mare had no intention of responding verbally.

She turned again to look at the stallions. Vercingetorix remained wary of Indian Hemp, but the spotted stallion placed not a toe out of line and seemed to have earned the dun’s approval for the time being. Vercingetorix had introduced to him his mares, after all, so he must be trustworthy enough.

Her shyness relatively dormant, Syndrome sized up the gangly stallion that stood at the edge of the water, not daring to enter its freezing depths. His hair was not shaggy; it wasn’t even thick, as if his winter coat had simply not developed. It sparked her curiosity that he must not have been born here. It didn’t surprise her, as neither had she, but it was still an interesting discovery. ”Where do you come from?” she asked.

IT’S A REVOLUTION, I SUPPOSE; WE’RE PAINTED RED TO FIT RIGHT IN.
