She decided the name suited him. It was unassuming, elegant, as she thought him to be. That was her first impression of her new companion, and first impressions are so important. “It’s nice to meet you, Sleekwing,” she replied with a friendly wave of her tail. After a final going-over, she brought her physical observations to a close, her bright smile revealing the only hint of what she thought of them: he was nice to look at.
They had both been playing it safe, feeling each other out from across the rocks. She appreciated that – so often others felt it necessary to invade her personal space. In the end, he made the first move, closing the distance between them in a few short bounds. This gave her a different view of the male and complimented his natural grace, which she also appreciated. Effortless. He moved easily across the uneven terrain, avoiding any potentially dangerous missteps.
Having settled again, it was his turn to look at her, and she quietly reveled in the attention. It was a simple satisfaction, watching him take her in; it warmed her right through. The familiar heat crept along her spine and into her neck. She could feel winter approaching fast, hot in her blood. “I’m Hush,” she offered with a coquettish tilt of her ginger head, temporarily ignoring his first question.
But she didn’t want him to leave just yet, and he seemed genuinely interested in what she might say. Thinking about the last few days made her extremely anxious: Sen, Dante, the bear. She stood and gave her coat a shake, forgetting her flirtations for a moment, before turning her warm eyes on Sleekwing again. “I seem to attract a lot of…negative energies,” she began mildly. “A few weeks ago myself and a friend, Coszcotl, were attacked by another wolf.” She shook her head and chuckled, despite how scary it had all been. “I really think he’d lost his mind. The two of us had just been talking, much like we are.” Here she paused to look pointedly in his direction, as if to suggest that he remain aware of his surroundings.
“But yesterday was genuinely awful. And confusing…” she drifted off, her eyes narrowed in thought as they stared unseeing into the cloudless autumn sky. “Sleekwing, what do you know about imprinting?” Her smile was gone when she looked back at him, lost in the whirl of her worries.
