 "The man who fears losing has already lost." Laughter. That was something he didn't hear every day.
With his younger, handsomer brother gone to track down Neassa at long last, it fell to tired old Solgar once again to pick up the slack and keep an eye on the herd. With the arrival of spring, the days were lengthening so that they were no longer a mere shadowy dream, and Solgar was spending this time out in the open as often as he could. It is good for herd morale, Rhaegar's voice echoed. Often, in his more sour moods, he wondered how the hell Rhaegar knew anything at all about running a herd, only to remember that back on the continent his half-brother had assumed leadership of their family when his sire passed away. And they had seemed happy enough. He found that the sunshine, what little there was of it, somehow was a boon to his mood. And, as he inclined his head in the direction the laughter had come from, he reflected that it seemed to improve the mood of the herd as well. Unless Rhaegar's words were true. Though he doubted that. Who in their right mind would take any joy from his presence? It had come from within the trees, but the stallion had neither the patience or the motive to track them down, what with his crippled leg and the knowledge that he must stay where the herd could see him. Flicking his tail irritably, he nibbled in passing at the new grass beneath his feet, and tried not to think of Neassa. But her face would not leave his mind's eye. Damn you, he thought woefully, before lifting his neck to draw Winter and Panthere out of the trees with a summoning whicker. He needed a distraction. And what better distraction than a rekindling of affairs with the two he'd been most distant from these past couple seasons? If Winter was in a good mood, there was no primer time.
