"The crude mortality of man."

He is the fool that believes not in his own mortality.
When Nymeria had separated herself from the herd to find her private birthing bed, the red stallion had turned his eyes onto her eldest daughter that had remained within the confines of the forest for a little too long. Not long ago, Vercingetorix had decided that the girl had overstayed her welcome, what with yet another mouth to feed arriving any moment (he was almost as fully aware of Nymeria's unduly long pregnancy as the dapple grey had been) and the girl's own twin seemed to have found greener grasses on the other side of the ocean.

So as the dun watched silently as the dominant mare retreated into the trees, he had been chewing a mouthful of grass rather peacefully before he had turned to spot the yearling. Ever since the grey mare had arrived with her two daughters in tow, the stallion had all but ignored them, and had only recently taken to resenting them. He had thought that first girl had left only because she could not stand the looming threat of the stallion driving them out, and thought nothing of her disappearance- whereas he assumed that Asha had a stronger bond with her mother, and thus posed a threat. Tensions between the stallion and the filly had been high since she had been weaned from her mother's teat, and his treatment towards her had almost been hostile the moment her mother had taken the abandoned filly under her wing.

Eyeing the girl, the stallion's mind had been made up. Vercingetorix knew there was no barrier standing between him and the girl now, and with her mother out of sight tending to her own personal business, he had already started to cut her off from the rest of the herd. For the first hour, the red dun had been keen to keep his body between the filly and the herd, ears laced backwards and tail lashing threateningly against his hindquarters as he tried to peacefully warn her off. After that seemingly infinite hour, it seemed that Vercingetorix had had enough, and focused his attention fully on the girl, finally starting to lunge at her with snapping teeth and yelling out hoarse, menacing screams that would be enough to drive her away.

Finally, she seemed to take the hint and took to the trees with the stallion right on her heels, occasionally snapping at air above her haunches to herd her away from the group. It was only natural that the stallion should drive out young that was not his own, and once she was a respectable distance away from the gathering that they had left behind, he had turned back. By the time Vercingetorix had reintegrated himself in the herd and chosen to graze quietly alongside them, Nymeria hobbled out of the trees with not only her adopted daughter in tow, but a small, dark colt. Curious of the newest addition to the herd, and all but fascinated at the appearance of another colt that would grow up alongside his first son, the stallion swung his head in the direction of the couple and pushed his ears forwards, letting his chin hang level with his knees and switching his tail over his hips once more. Sniffing at the air to assess the situation, he can smell the metallic odor of blood and inches forwards slowly, almost certain that something had attacked the mother and her children.
