Six impossible things...
The sun had returned and was warming the seawater off of Jessamine’s back. Her mane, ragged and tangled, was beginning to dry as well, and no longer felt so heavy. Jessa’s body ached dully from the battle it endured against the angry waves and currents, and she wanted to lie down for a bit. As her knees began to bend, however, she had to straighten right back up again; a form was charging at her, and the mare took a few steps backward toward the sand again. Normally she would have lifted her head up to warn a possible attacker that she would not submit so easily, but not this time; she was in another’s territory, and she was tired, so she kept her head and eyes level but backed up so as not to seem threatening.
The charging shape -- a mare -- halted in front of her. Her eyes were confused, but all signs of aggression were absent from the woman’s body. Perhaps she had been expecting a stallion. She spoke, and Jessa politely reached out with her nose to exchange breaths with the stranger. Or rather, the inhabitant; Jessamine herself fit the title of ‘stranger’ more appropriately.
“No; I got lost. I’m Jessa,” she said.
The other mare still seemed tense, and the gray paint followed her eyes to the tall grass beyond them. She saw nothing, but perhaps that was what she was supposed to see; the faint scent of milk was barely noticeable, and Lily’s protective stance suggested she was alert for danger toward someone other than herself. Jessa didn’t say anything; it was probably not something one would discuss with a stranger.
Out of the corner of her eye she spotted a shape, one she hadn’t noticed before, or hadn’t been there before. A stallion was moving in their general direction, stopping once for a moment before picking up a canter and stopping at Lily’s side. He spoke with a friendly tone and Jessa stretched out her nose in response to his, finding no atmosphere of hostility around him. She smiled a bit at his friendly tone.
“I’m Jessa, and thank you,” she said. “I just got caught in that storm. I’m a bit lost, though I didn’t really know where I was going to begin with, I suppose. I briefly met a stallion but he disappeared, and I assumed I was supposed to look for him.” She watched the pair before her, noting that they smelled nothing like Bayard had; but the other stallion’s scent was faded in her nostrils, and she had not really known him. Jessa knew she was coming up with excuses to avoid another round with the sea, but she found it hard to come up with reasons why she should continue looking for Bayard. The prairie was nice; perhaps, if they let her, she could put off her search and rest.
