Daedra had not slept very much last night. Although she had not met any of Vercingetorix’s other mares in her midnight wanderings, she knew they were around somewhere, and it was hard to sleep in company when alone was all she knew. She did not trust these strangers she had stumbled among, not even Vercingetorix whose scent still clung to her dark skin. But night had passed eventually – the sun had risen again. She took the opportunity to explore the Forest in the light. It was quiet, with only the gentle sounds of chirping of birds and woodland creatures rustling through the trees – until an anguished cry and the thunder of hoof beats broke the peace. Daedra lifted her head, ears flicking around as she tried to locate the source of the noise. With nothing else to keep her amused, she decided to investigate and followed the sound. She moved easily through the trees, though her silver-white hair caught on stray branches, leaving a cobweb-like trail behind her. Twigs cracked and leaves crunched quietly beneath her hooves as she found her way into a clearing where she found the culprit of all the commotion. Daedra paused at the edge, watching, unwilling to come much closer. A white-splashed chestnut mare stood before her, her breathing heavy and panicked, her eyes glittering with the tell-tale signs of tears. Daedra immediately regretted her decision to investigate: she could not abide the over-emotional. She snorted, more annoyed than empathetic. “What are you wailing about?” she demanded, her tone somewhere between bored and angry. She hoped this girl was lost. |
