Devlin had never known gentleness. In all his life, his experiences with love and lust had been violent and fast affairs -- fucking, growling, sweating, cursing. He felt the erotic tension between them, the slow burn of it. It spread warm in his belly rather than ripping through him like a quickly-burning fire. Devlin lived in a world all of his own -- he saw only himself, faced with something he desired so fiercely that it made his heart quicken. This was far from a matter of simple sexual attraction. This was something substantial and terrifying, something he had spent all of his life trying to avoid.
It made him angry.
He hated that Dimitri could make him feel; hated the lack of control he had over the situation. This was not the way Devlin lived his life. Devlin was a creature of selfishness and primal needs -- the feelings stirring in his body as he stared down at Dimitri were alien and frightening.
It made him want to pin the male down and rip out his throat.
But then, he couldn't quite place the reason he felt such an urge. Did it really frighten him so much to know that he was indeed capable of feeling attachment to something other than his own agenda? To admit this would be to admit weakness. No, he couldn't face it.
In spite of all of this, in spite of the inner turmoil tumbling like a storm through his brain, Devlin found himself laughing. It was a low, wicked laugh -- a dark laugh that dripped like inky blackness from his tongue.
He stretched upwards, climbing with a regal elegance up to a standing position, staring down at Dimitri with that merciless glint in his eyes -- eyes which sparkled like black-and-blue sapphires, nearly hidden beneath a dark, furrowed brow. His voice was a low, velvety purr as he took a confident step closer to the male, skin brushing against skin.
"I like you."
Seldom had he spoken those three words without the usual twist of sarcasm lighting his dark voice. His gaze remained fixated on the male, eager to see what flinch of emotion would cross the empty-eyed creature.
