The art of love is largely the art of persistence

The mare knew when her stallion was approaching, the thudding sound of his hooves a loud announcement before his arrival. The woman turned so that her body curled around the nursing babe, her golden eyes darkening as she awaited his arrival with pinned ears. It was apparent that Lyden did not see all the warning signs with his nicker of greeting and then burying his nose into her neck. At first it threw the mare off, making her ears press forward and her gaze become curious of him as she eyed him. “Lyden?” she said quietly, question in her tone as she wasn’t quite sure what to make of this. It had been so long since she had even seen him and needless to say their last encounter hadn’t been this pleasant.

Quickly Lyden started talking and the mare waited patiently as he chattered on. It seemed nerves had gotten the better of him and after all of this silence he was finally talking. What he had to say was more surprising than the actual sound of his voice and Skylar nearly flinched when she felt her daughter brush against her shoulder. Dropping her head, Skylar gave a soft nuzzle to the girl’s neck but all the while she kept one ear twisted towards the stallion as she listened. The child, with big blue eyes, stared up at her father curiously as if he was a totally different species in general.

When Lyden was done talking, Skylar finally lifted her head away from her daughter to look upon Lyden once more. She wasn’t sure what to say now, not when he said he only breathed because of her and their child. How had someone she didn’t really even know come to care for her so much? Despite his stalking, he couldn’t have really gotten to know her that well. Skylar knew for a fact she did not carry her heart of her sleeve for him to read buts he would not argue the fact.

“Lyden, I can’t promise anything that far. But what I do promise is that our daughter will spend time with her father, and will live with her father until she is old enough to make her own choices.” Skylar replied and gave him a kind smile. The mare was always true to her word and hoped that he would stay true to his.
