One thing I will not do here in a board is go into our verification process in great detail. Doing that will cause the hoaxes to be alerted to what is looked for. There are many many indicators. And they are being improved constantly based on input from people that have actually worked with the species. There are a few hoaxes floating around as we speak, one being a west coast cat looking in a sliding door that was taken on the west coast. Claim is its from New Hampshire.
