This is your life and it's ending one minute at a time

wood duck mother and duckling

Xina had never thought she would be in this sort of position, when she was considering the protection of any other stallion but her own. Yet Debonaire had not given her a choice and the mother knew this was an opportunity that she should not pass up, no matter how much her pride said she was strong enough to protect her own. She was quiet several minutes, Mera’s innocent gaze sweeping up to her mother now that her new friend was on her side. Xina looked into her daughter’s eyes while she debating and finally a sigh escaped her ebony lips. Before she could even say the words Mera knew what decision had been made. The slight give in her expression had been clear enough and the girl gave a squeal of delight before she spun back around to Sahin.

“We can stay! We can stay!” she cheered joyfully before she dashed around the stallion, kicking her heels up and tossing sand in her wake. Xina’s expression hardened slightly but she did not scold the girl again. Hopefully with someone new the girl would keep preoccupied and not become so bored as to run away again. Turning her two toned gaze to the golden stallion she gave him a doubting look, as if maybe she was second guessing her decision. Yet she did not say so but instead closed herself off again so that her face was now unreadable. “I hope you don’t regret what you have done” she warned the stallion. Mera’s wild spirit could be a lot to handle at times but surely her child would mind her manners good enough to keep their new home and guardian.

Totally ignoring her mother, Mera raised up on her hind legs to try and reach the locks of hair around Sahin’s ears so that she may give them a playful tug. “Race with me!” she said before darting away from the older horses and back towards the surf. She did not enter the tide despite her new found name, but instead continued on down the beach upon the wet sands so that the spray could dampen her belly and sides while the salty winds rushed across her face and the girl did not once look back to see if anyone followed her.
