The silence that had fallen after Nyx’s call to the other mares made her grind her teeth in anger. She waited, and no one came. How is it that the mares so easily let themselves be ruled by a stallion who cared for nothing but spreading his genes and gathering the largest herd possible? Pinning her ears back in frustration, Nyx called again, but she didn’t expect an answer. Clearly she was the only one here with some fight still left in her.

She flicked her black tail in annoyance, before pricking her ears forward as the sound of an approaching horse captured her attention. She tensed, lowering her head slightly, ready in case it was Chompy coming after her. She knew she would have to flee if it was, there was no way she could take him, but she still didn’t want to fly away prematurely. Instead she waited as the sound grew closer, and soon a mare quite similar to herself appeared in front of her.

In fact, the mare before her seemed to be a cross between herself and Chompy, and at this thought Nyx shivered. She pinned her ears at the mares first speech, and arched her neck, trying to make herself seem as tall as possible. Not as tall as the mare, but that didn’t matter. Her ears relaxed as the mare appeared to calm down, but Nyx’s body was still tense, especially when the mare, Impa was her name, described the one horse who Nyx was trying to get away from. “Chompy?” She asked, eyes glancing over the mare warily. “If your brother doesn’t speak and likes to bite, then yes he still lives here. Rules here, in fact. Over me.” She spat, not directed at the mare, but at her situation.

Realizing she too was being rude, not introducing herself as Impa had done, she sighed. “I’m Nyx.” She said, her tone lighter.
