At this rate, I should style myself 'Sable the Island-Hopper'. Or perhaps 'Sable the Adventurer'? That has a nicer ring to it.
She had been loathe to leave the beauty and life of Atlantis behind, but her soul still desired the buzz and excitement of travel, and Sable was rarely one to ignore the whims of her truer self. So it was to the next island along that she swam. Even before she stepped into the ocean she could see it there, pale and flat like a giant eggshell on the horizon, beckoning her forward. Mercifully it was a shorter swim this time, but it seemed the warm climate of Atlantis had leeched into the water and stretched all the way to this new place, carrying her on a current so brisk that she was half afraid she might drown.
Sable arrived sputtering and blowing seawater from her nostrils onto the shores of a vast, sandy wasteland. Salt stung her eyes, but through her tears she could see enough to remark to herself that it looked like little more than a giant beach. Disappointment threatened to deflate her - for nothing interesting was likely to be here - until she remembered something her sister had once told her: "Stay away from the desert, Sable. You know what a desert is, right? They are death for our kind. Maybe someone could survive in one if they were especially clever, but let's not beat around the bush: you aren't clever, little sister, and I won't be responsible for your death by lying to you."
Sable had no idea what her sister had been talking about: this didn't look all that bad! It was maybe a bit on the hot side, but she had always preferred warmth to cold, and she had never been a voracious eater. Besides... she lifted her nose to the breeze and inhaled deeply. There are others here.
