The general range is about 18-20 inches. However you have to look carefully. Cougars will avoid stepping on leaves, sticks, or objects that make noise, or anything that might hurt their feet. Bobcats are well under when walking, 12 or less. However, bobcats can have a longer stride when running, as can cougars. The size is the best determining factor. If you can get a long reliable set of tracks, and they are under 1 3/4 inches across, and well under 18 inches stride, they are most likely bobcat.
