They always seemed to end up uncomfortable, too much known and too little said...and of course, they both nursed secrets. Was that the problem? Was that what was holding them back now? Or was it the same thing it had always been; they both worried too much. Perhaps they should have given up years ago, but he hadn’t wanted to; he never wanted to. Giving up wasn’t an option; he had always been stubborn like that. He’d always thought that if he tried he could fix everything that needed fixing. All it took was work. He shook his head, leaning forwards so that his elbow hit the table, and ran his fingers through his hair. It was difficult; why was everything always so difficult. “I can’t,” Flynn managed at last, unable to look at her anymore, “I can’t build a life around that Ellie.” She must know. She knew him well enough to know. He didn’t have an adventurous soul, he didn’t like uncertainty, he believed in justice and law and security. How could he build anything on foundations of half promises? And yet...and yet... “I want you to stay,” he told her, “I want you to stay with me, I want us to be together, I always have.” Flynn sighed again, forcing himself to look up at her again, “take a room in the castle,” he suggested, “and we’ll try again. We’ll go for walks, I’ll teach you to ride, we’ll stay up late and watch the stars. We’ll try again, one step at a time?” |
