I was driving north on Route 140 around 6:30 pm in mid-June 2014 (near the Sterling town line, heading to Mount Wachusett) and saw an animal cross the road ahead of me. It was tan with maybe a two-foot-long tail and probably weighed 125-150 pounds.
I didn't get a good look because as soon as it got onto the roadway it zigged away and crossed the road diagonally, ducking under a guard rail and disappearing, but it ran like a cat (dogs have a different gait). It was only in view for a second or two.
I can't say for a fact that this was a cougar/mountain lion due to the shortness of the sighting, but if I had to place a bet, that's what I'd say it was. Replies:
