"Danny, why don't you head home for awhile?"

Danny glanced up from his heavy medical tome, his eyes glassy and unfocused with exhaustion. Dr. Gupta frowned at him, finding the dark bags beneath those blue-green eyes more than a bit unsettling. It had been one thing when Danny had been pushing himself to help those in need - after the dome broke it had seemed there was always someone to sew up or be examined - but things had begun to settle down now and there was no reason he, or anyone else, ought to be pushing themselves to the brink. Danny's gaze slowly focused with obvious effort on the boy's part, but he shook his head.

"Oh, no, it's fine. I'll stay with you," Danny answered, tripping a bit over some of the words as his sluggish tongue fought to keep up with his head. The doctor's frown deepened, seeing through Danny's tired smile to the exhaustion and grief that lie beneath. Danny had taken the death of his young friend, Elle, harder than he'd let on, and it worried Gupta that he had said nothing to him about it. They were more than teacher and student, they were friends, and Gupta worried.

"Danny, are you-?"

"I'm fine," Danny said, too quickly and too cheerfully. "Just a little tired from helping out with those surgeries this morning, that's all. Don't you worry about me, Doctor!"

"Alright..." the doctor replied. Had Danny been more alert, he would have seen the plotting sparkle in the older man's dark eyes as he stood. "I'll just be right back then, get us some coffee."

"That'd be great," Danny mumbled, his gaze falling back to the same paragraph it had been focused on for the last hour. He was so busy trying to commit it to memory that he didn't hear Dr. Gupta's footsteps fade as the man walked down the hall, the creak of the clinic's back door sliding open, nor the sound of voices as Gupta spoke to someone - or something - that waited there. What he did notice, a few seconds later, was his familiar knocking him right out of his chair. "Sol!"

"I'm bored," the tiger moaned, somehow managing to look sulky even as he pinned Danny to the ground with little effort and smothered his face in kisses from his scratchy tongue. "Can't we do something fun?"

"I'm busy, you oaf!" Danny squealed, trying to wiggle free and wipe his face off at the same time. "Go away!"

"But it's lunch time! I'm starving, aren't you starving? I think you're starving," Solarius insisted, pausing at the perfect time to hear Danny's belly rumble. "Told you!"

"Fine!" Danny yelled, finally managing to squirm out from under Sol's massive paws. "Dr. Gupta, we're going to get something to eat and then we'll be back. Is that okay?"

"Fine by me," Gupta replied, trying to hide the smile tugging at his lips. He knew that, if anyone was able to get Danny out of the clinic long enough to eat, bathe, and sleep, it would be the pushy cat. "Don't hurry back, now, you've earned your rest!"

Danny started to object, but Sol had latched onto one of his pant legs and was dragging him out the door so he had time only to give a forlorn little wave before he disappeared around the corner.

A half hour later, with Sol's "helpful encouragement" (i.e. headbutting and gentle nipping every time Danny slowed), the two had made their way back to the castle and begged a hearty meal from the kitchens. While Sol happily gnawed on a massive bone - the remnants of his "snack" - Danny shoveled bite after bite of soup into his mouth, finally realizing how hungry he actually was. They were both so preoccupied that they entirely missed the sound of footsteps approaching...
