unsung and lost

The mare confirmed what Dragon had hoped he would not hear. If the dark mare lived at the Ridge, than it was obvious that the buckskin stallion would too. The black stallion knew it was foolish to hope that they were just visiting; their scent swarmed the area. The next words of the mare kept the black stallion silent for a time. He did not have a good answer, being that he could not consider the waterfall land anything more than a temporary haven and that he was currently standing in his past home. Finally he smiled, slowly, raising eyes that had dropped to study the ground. "I do not have a home." Dragon realized his words might sound as though he was there to take over the land. He quickly spoke up again. "I am more of a traveler, if you will."

The Mustang looked away from the pair, letting his gaze sweep over the beach and ocean he had just come from. He would rather not venture back into the tide but he doubted he would be welcomed much longer. He wondered whether it would be best to take his leave while they (hopefully) still had a good impression of him or if he could push his luck and ask if he could spend a few days exploring the land. That latter was not the best idea, so the older stallion turned his head back to focus on the pair to manage an excuse and take his leave. Instead, the buckskin spoke. Dragon felt frozen as he listened. The few words were simple yet held the black stallion fast. He did not know how the buckskin had known, but the black was glad for some odd reason. Perhaps he looked too familiar with the land or perhaps he had gained the comfortable look of one safe in their home. "Yes," Dragon finally said quietly, ears pushing forward as the buckskin continued. He dipped his head slightly, barely lifting his eyes to place the names with the faces.

"Thank you," he finally blurted out, "thank you." The black stallion honestly did not know what else to say. He had not expected to be welcomed into his old home. He stood for a short time, mouth twisting in strange ways as he tried to sound out more words. He dared to speak once he had figured out what he wished to say. "May I stay here until the sun rises, so I can... see it again?" The black stallion fell silent and dared to glance up at the buckskin. He felt like a colt asking his father for permission to explore a neighboring island. He would have asked to stay for a few days, but that seemed to be pushing it much to far. He did not want to be a bother to the buckskin, Kasabian, and staying in the Ridge for too long would make him one.
