CHARITABLE ADVERTISING on Web Site There are many worthwhile charitable causes in existence, but we can only accept sponsorship or fundraising efforts on Fusilier Association websites, that specifically support approved Fusilier charities. This essentially means that it is acceptable to use these pages to seek sponsorship for The Fusiliers Aid Society (which includes Fallen Fusiliers), and The Fusilier Memorial fund only. We now have our own dedicated justgiving site (http://www.justgiving.com/fusiliersaidsociety), which you can use to help raise money for your cause. If you let RHQ (Asst Regt Sec) know the specific cause you are raising money for, it will be directed to the correct fund. Messages soliciting sponsorship for causes or charities other than the Fusilier ones mentioned above should not be placed on the message board and may be removed by the Webmaster.

SPECIAL ORDER OF THE DAY – THE SECOND BATTALION THE ROYAL REGIMENT OF FUSILIERS
IP: 81.159.24.45

At 1600 hours (BST) on Tuesday 5 August 2014 in Alexander Barracks, Cyprus, the Regimental Flag of the 2nd Battalion The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers will be lowered for the last time. This will be a quiet ceremony where those remaining in the 2nd Battalion and their families will gather to pay their respects to the passing into history of a great Battalion. They will remember those members of the Battalion who have lost their lives in the service of their Queen and Country, and the family members of the 2nd Battalion who died in an IRA terrorist attack in England. They will not be forgotten, and neither will the 2nd Battalion. The 2nd Battalion has served with courage in Northern Ireland, Bosnia, Kosovo, Iraq and Afghanistan. When it was announced they were to merge with the 1st Battalion they were a fully manned unit, training for deployment to Afghanistan as the Theatre Reserve Battalion. The refrain ‘ours is not to reason why…’ may never have been more apposite.

All members of the 2nd Battalion have now been relocated, with 224 moving to the 1st Battalion and the remainder distributed amongst other Infantry Regiments, the largest cohort going to the PWRR.

The Colonel in Chief and the Colonel of the Regiment wish all members of the 2nd Battalion good luck and send their deepest appreciation for their outstanding contribution to the security and defence of our great Nation. Never found wanting, they faced every challenge and danger with courage, steadfastness, resolve, pride and an iron will to win against all odds; that is what being a Fusilier is all about. They will serve their new Battalions and Regiments in the same manner and show what being a Second Fusilier meant.

The Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Colonel Jim Taylor MBE, has issued the following special order of the day for Tuesday 5 August 2014:

“Today we will lower the Regimental Flag of the Second Battalion, The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers for the last time. Tomorrow our handover to 2 PWRR will be complete and our role as the Cyprus Operations Battalion will come to an end. On 31st August 2014, the Second Fusiliers will be removed from the Army’s Order of Battle. As we lower the flag this evening, we can reflect on a job well done; both in Cyprus over the last 2 years and since our formation on St George’s Day in 1968. We are an operationally proven, robust and highly professional infantry battalion. We can hold our heads high and take great pride in our achievements. Since 1968 we have done much to honour our great forbearer regiments. Each of them has an exceptional place in military history and set a fine example for us to follow. The Second Fusiliers have an equally proud history that will stand the scrutiny of time. In our 46 years we have conducted successful operations in Northern Ireland, Bosnia, Kosovo, Iraq and Afghanistan. The Second Fusiliers will long be remembered for the dignity and forbearance its soldiers have shown in the face of every adversity, and for its record of success on operations and in barracks. The last year has been no exception. As the Regimental Flag is lowered this evening, you can be rightly proud that we pass into history at the top of our game. You will not falter in your new battalions if you take the spirit and ethos of the Second Fusiliers with you. We now hand the baton to the First Fusiliers. They inherit our legacy of distinguished service and will be richer for it. Once a Fusilier, always a Fusilier!”
