Vesti

Vesti hadn’t truly left the Desert in a long time. But, there were things to think about. Things that needed to be worked over in her mind. The Hills were still empty, as were the distant Badlands. Vesti couldn’t help but wonder if the Dunes also was devoid of life. It was her old home, and though the moving hills shifted, she knew her way around as easily as ever.

It was almost like she’d never left in the first place.

All of Salem is the same, The Voice commented.

“No it isn’t,” Vesti stated. “You know the hills and Badlands are better than the Dunes and Desert.” They rounded another dune glowing in the moonlight. The sorrel mare moved with ease and confidence. She knew where she was going. “It’s tougher sand. Dirt. Small grasses.”

They are all just as dry and hot. There’s no seasons here, Vesti.

“Right, seasons,” Vesti muttered. “There is only one important Season and it’s passed for another year. Get over it. This is Salem, remember?” She had never seen the Voice, she knew it was merely her own mind. It was her company though, a fractured part having come over too many years of isolation and anguish.

Of course I remember. We haven’t left since Badr brought you here. Right up that beach. We nearly died not too far away due to your stubborn hatred of him.

“I was never wrong,” Vesti snapped. “We accepted him. He was here for long enough. Then he left. Just like all the others.”

Everyone leaves eventually, the Voice was sullen. Even we will. Vesti let the thought settle in the silence.

“That day is still far off,” Vesti stated, descending the dune. There was a small oasis just ahead. They were deep inland. She could have come from any territory. She looked around. Life was a strange thing on Salem. She wasn’t sure what she would find, if there was anything to find.
