“Oh,” Vesti’s mind worked over what Orhan had said about the large palomino. She looked back at Carisa, her smile friendly. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to exclude you.”

She’s deaf! I knew that. No you didn’t.

“Welcome to the Desert, Carisa,” Vesti said. “Been a while since we’ve had anyone new. In fact, I think before you, I was the newest in the herd.” There had been visitors. Kasibean and the other mare who had been visiting from Atlantis. The arabian Orhan had been very awkward around. A new herd mate though was exciting indeed. “You’re a lucky girl. Not too many can survive just wandering around out here.”

She looks tough enough. Big though. Heavy. Wonder if she could survive the Dunes. I’m secure in my position. Sure you are. I’m not the jealous type. You’ve never needed to be jealous before. Vesti shook her head, hoping to bash the Voice into silence. It’s cold laughter stated otherwise.

“I hope you’ll be… less distracted for a little,” Vesti said to Orhan. “Things have been quiet around here. Boring honestly. More boring than usual… not even a sand snake to be seen.” Maybe the entire island was holding it’s breath. El Aran had been quite scared of something. And Vesti definitely wanted to talk to Orhan about her.
