The air smelled like spring today. Chuma could practically taste it on her tongue. The warm breezes, the fresh grass still new and tender. The wind was laden with it, heavy with the smells of new life, and Chuma couldn’t help but feel good as she pushed through the tangles of branches, their twiggy fingers scratching at her sides. Her narrow chest felt full of a new energy and there was a spring in her step as her bright red and white pelt flashed through the dark evergreens.
This was her first time in the forest, and she knew she was taking a chance. You never knew what sort of stallion a place might belong to... but Chuma felt invincible today. She would be careful and mind where she went, but nothing would stop her. In truth she had barely thought about the consequences before slipping into the water and coming to Luthien. She was perhaps a little like her mother that way, much too focused on what she wanted to be bothered by the dangers that followed her.
There wasn’t really any particular reason why she had come here. It had been spur of the moment, a sudden desire to see what it was like on another island. She would never admit that she was running. It had been a long time ago that her mother had abandoned her on the Crossing, and it had no right to bother her anymore. It really didn’t.
As if spurred on by this thought the white splashed mare picked up her pace, her stride lengthening as she wove easily through the trees, her slim build slipping through the dense bushes with apparent ease. Today was going to be a good day, she could feel it, and she would fight with all her fire anyone who tried to tell her otherwise.
