The shadows were thick here, deep in the heart of Atlantis. The jungle swathed the world in shades of deep green and brown, punctuated here and there by a bright flower or bird. The air was warm and thick, draped over the island like a living thing. Maji was perfectly at home here, wending through the creepers and leaves like she was just another shadow. Her dramatic seal brown and white pelt was streaked with grime and water, moisture beading on the mare’s hide and running down her chest and legs in rivulets.
Life was treating Maji well now that she was back where she belonged. Everything was once more in accord, her time now divided between the island and the water as it should be. Tarrant, the new lead, had left her well alone and if it hadn’t been for his scent clinging persistently to the Paradise she may have forgotten all about him, so absorbed in the leafy world around her was she. It was a peaceful existance, if somewhat ghostlike. She was barely part of the herd, dwelling in the deepest places she could find and avoiding others when posable, but it suited her. It was all she wanted.
Only occasionally did thoughts of the daughter she had left behind slip, unbidden, into the splashed mare’s mind, and even more rarely the chestnut filly’s father. Maji was not a creature to dwell on the past. She lived in the here and now, untroubled for the most part by thoughts of past or future and instead entirely absorbed by the moment. And this moment, this place, was warm, damp and safe - and through the thick foliage, past trees and choking vines, she could here the water murmuring to her as it lapped at the shoreline, whispering over pebbles and sand.
The ocean was content and so was she.
