It was his first solo trip. Rownan wasn’t interested in wandering off in the same direction as he was so instead Jedi was picking his careful way about the rocks and sticks that surrounded the valley the herd lived in. The white stuff had faded away and now there was just all this green stuff. His mother liked the green stuff. But he’d tried it and decided it wasn’t very good. A small pair of rabbits chased each other as they crossed his path. They’d turned from white to brown and Jedi had to admit the creatures were a bit strange.

He trotted off after them, soon finding himself in the more rocky areas. Eventually, he stopped and looked around and it dawned on him that he didn’t know where he was. His blue eyes filled a little bit with tears as the fear set in. Before, he’d always had an escort, either his mother or one of his older sisters. There wasn’t a reason to be afraid when there was someone who knew what was going on right there. His ears and head sunk a little. The downside of no snow meant that he couldn’t just retrace his hoof prints back to his mother’s side.

The little pinto gulped and turned about in place. Maybe if he just walked back down the slope he could figure out where he was and how to get back to his mother. Yeah. That was as good a plan as any. Unfortunately, the level-headed thought pattern lasted about sixty seconds before he heard the crunching of twigs and came face to face with an enormous caribou. The colt let out a scream, turned, and bolted away from the much larger animal.
