for years the blue jays have run the roost around here; all the other birds know to get out of their way as they pig out; even the huge pileated is intimidated by them

today, however, the red-headed woodpecker has been vigourously defending the spruce tree where the peanut butter gets spread; it won't let a jay come anywhere near it which is frustrating them no end as they like to gobble it up as quickly as can be

every now and then the defender will take a dainty little nibble then move up the tree, clean off its beak and wait to defend its territory again
