HENMAN SCRAPES PAST ENQVIST ON DAY ONE

Tim Henman opened his 2014 Statoil Masters Tennis account with a 6-7, 6-4 10-8 win over Swede Thomas Enqvist at the world famous Royal Albert Hall on Wednesday.

Henman rushed to the net at every opportunity, taking time away from his flat-hitting opponent. It was a clash of styles that delighted the 3000-strong crowd.

'Thomas and I talked a bit after the match and we were both pretty pleased with how we played, which is pretty good,' said Henman. 'It's great for the crowd to see a match where both players are on good form. I was pretty lucky to scrape through actually.'

Four-time Wimbledon semi-finalist Henman is attempting to go one better in than he did here in 2013, when he finished runner-up to Australian Pat Rafter. Victory over Enqvist now puts Henman top of Group A, and one win away from guaranteed qualification for a second consecutive Statoil Masters Tennis final. Reflecting on his past experiences at this most spectacular of venues, the former British Number One also talked about the feeling he gets each and every time he steps onto the world's most unique tennis court.

'Every time I come out here at the Albert Hall I get a tingle,' he said. 'It's an iconic venue and you can really sense the history of all the great performers who have been here over the years. It's special to be out there once again.'

Elsewhere, debutant Xavier Malisse overcame Sergi Bruguera 6-3, 3-6, 10-3 in Group B.

RODDICK ARRIVES

Whenever tennis players lay eyes on the tennis court inside the Royal Albert Hall for the first time, the reaction is invariably the same - one of open-mouthed awe. Andy Roddick was no different when he stepped into the arena to meet the media and have his picture taken.
