FROM THE OCEAN SHE RISES

The musk of an unfamiliar stallion catches the buckskin mare's attention as she is raising her head from the cool, refreshing water. Her ears twitch and rotate curiously, nostrils flaring to confirm that there definitely is a potential intruder in her home. She listens quietly for a moment, straining to hear if Lyden or Braylen might be speaking with the beast; that he had been invited. No sound comes except for the unfamiliar hoof beats of whatever stallion is in her home, and Lyden's from the opposite direction. Normally she would have gone charging after the stallion to intercept him but reasons she can't quite fathom, she remained where she was.

Her blue eyes settle on the pale red stallion as he emerges from the the trees. Uncharacteristically, her first thoughts concern his looks and potential virility and she chastises herself for thinking such about a stallion that is not her own. She curses the effect of her own body's cycles, stepping backwards in the water to put some distance between them. At his assertion of ownership, the buckskin responds with a sharp snort and and a stamp of her hoof. ”You will need to try harder than that.” she informed him neutrally, both outraged that that he would try and lay claim to anything within the forest, but secretly rather liking it at the same time.

It was possible the last of her words were drowned out by the explosive arrival of Lyden. He made a charge for the stallion and the buckskin mare nimbly danced away from any potential skirmish. She stood on the sidelines, blue eyes watching carefully and tail flagged as if to encourage them to fight over her; that the winner would win more than just the fight. When she realises what she is doing, she turns sharply with an abrupt snort. She had made herself a promise after the birth of her daughter, a break from having another foal back to back. She cannot stand and watch the two males. It is too much temptation.

Without a second glance she slips away from the scuffle, off through the trees and into ocean.
