At his initial question, the heavy dappled mare smiled again, her lips curving upwards in what she hoped was a polite yet genuine manner. "We're doing well," she replied with a small dip of her chin. "Zakhar especially. I think we were made to live in a place like this."
Asha had, of course, been born not far from here, but it was a memory long buried and forgotten.
At his second question, her smile faded. One silver ear twisted backwards against the mess of her mane. After taking a moment to glance behind her at the roan colt, she bowed her head to indicate that she and Dogun should step a few paces away. Only once they were out of earshot did she reply, but her voice was quiet and terse, and her eyes did not quite meet those of the pony king.
"It's like I said before. The stallion... who got me pregnant... I wanted to be as far away from him as possible." She paused to swallow heavily against a lump in her throat. "If it's all right, I would rather say no more. It's a memory I do not like to revisit."
She sighed, and met his eyes with a silent apology written across her face. "Why don't you tell me about yourself instead? I still know so little about you."
Behind them, a stone's throw away, one of the blue roan colt's eyes opened.
