fenris

Through the veil of their courtesies, there was a tension visible; a wariness that seemed to increase the rift between the two stallions' bodies, though neither of them had moved. I will follow you to ensure that you make it, the small grullo said, and Fenris only smiled and nodded his thanks. It was evident that the small stallion had marked Fenris as a potential danger to his herd, and the yearling made no attempt to ease his suspicions. It was better to be perceived as a threat; the weak made neither desirable allies nor worthy enemies.

As they walked in silence, Fenris wondered which the pony king would prove to be. Had he answered the questions that were asked of him honestly, or was he leading Fenris further from the truth that he sought? Whatever may come, I will see to it that he is repaid. A favor for a favor, or blood for betrayal. The Lagoon will not leave its debts unpaid.

They emerged from the Forest to find a grassy tundra. It didn't take long for Fenris to locate the herd gathered where the sea curved away from the land, or for his eyes to find the figure whose pale mane was like snow against her shadowy coat. Without a backward glance or a word of farewell, the dark bay was drawn forward, his strides lengthening to consume the field, like fire and fury transformed into flesh.
