War and Peace; Heaven and Hell

Jedi was just at his father’s hip. The little painted boy still seemed to want to learn from his old man, though there was definitely some anger going on in the colt’s mind. Soljor’s face now bore a thoughtful expression, especially when he looked at the boys and the older girls. Jedi was definitely getting a feeling of impending doom. Soljor had informed the boys that they would be leaving in spring. That they would go where he told them to go. Jedi had been too quick to point out that they were not fillies. Soljor had retorted that as their father, he knew better. That had been the beginning of a long argument.

That was why they were silent today. Soljor had insisted that Jedi take his tern on Lower Patrol, despite the colt’s protests. There was nothing but movement through the frost. Very boring stuff. That is, until a trumpet ripped the cold air apart. Jedi’s ears flipped up, his head lifting. His father also alerted. Soljor immediately turned towards the beach and Jedi followed.

Soljor’s face was business. Another announcement call. That made once a season now. Curious. He’d gone a full year before without a visitor. It wasn’t so much concerning as annoying. Soljor liked his quiet, secure home. Then again, he couldn’t go his whole life without interaction with the outside world. After all, he needed to keep an eye on things.

Once the pair approached the beach, Soljor recognized the scent of the Lagoon brought in by the wind off the sea. Soljor spotted the bay paint and knew Felony had arrived. He’d been expecting a visit from the Marauder eventually.

He approached, not relaxed as if Felony was a friend. Not aggressive as if he were an intruder. It was about business. Jedi wasn’t sure what to think, but he followed and Soljor allowed it.

“Felony,” Soljor greeted. He glanced at Jedi. He waited for the Lagoon stallion to explain why he’d decided to make the swim out here. There wasn’t much else he could do. He couldn’t assume after all. Jedi suddenly felt as if he were going to be on display.

Impending doom had returned.
