Dedicated to all those that have lost a loved one to war.
I’m engulfed in sadness.
When I visit his new home
I don’t know why he was taken,
I only know he’s gone.
The minister's hollow words
Offer no relief
His wife and I just set and cry
Nothing can end our grief
Rifled soldiers attend
His flag draped narrow bed
I want him here with us,
But God took him instead.
The minister is through now,
He has had his say
There will never, in my life,
Be a sadder day
The flag is carefully folded
And given to the wife
And she’ll walk forward slowly
Into her lonely life
The thunder of the rifles
Speak a last salute
He was taken suddenly,
And so absolute
A soldier’s playing taps now,
And tears freely flow.
And the sounds drift away
Till just a faint echo
The services are over now,
But life itself’s not done
It starts again tomorrow
With the rising of the sun.
